Highway 101 in Novato was jammed in both directions early Friday after a trailer truck overturned overnight and spilled debris into lanes.
The incident was reported southbound about 1:23 a.m. near the De Long Avenue on-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officer Andrew Barclay said the truck was towing a flatbed trailer with a large amount of metal scrap when the wreck occurred.
“(It) appears the driver may have dozed off and allowed the truck to drift to the left, into the center divide, where it began scraping down the metal guardrail,” Barclay said.
He said the truck rolled onto its left side and spilled debris across northbound lanes. The driver suffered minor injuries, Barclay said.
The CHP reduced southbound to one lane to allow Caltrans workers to conduct ”a massive cleanup,” including gasoline that spilled from the truck’s punctured tank. Barclay said the fuel spill was not substantial.
By 4:06 a.m., the truck was placed upright as debris cleanup continued.
“Caltrans is taking load after load of scrap away in dump trucks and has requested additional resources to get everything,” Barclay said Friday morning.
Work on the damaged guardrails was expected for much of the day. At 12:30 p.m., Barclay reported all lanes of the highway had reopened.
