NOVATO
Relief fund to aid
small businesses
The City Council voted Tuesday to create a fund to provide grants of up to $5,000 to small businesses affected by the coronavirus “shelter in place” order.
To qualify, a business must have a storefront in the city, fewer than 26 employees and no more than $1 million in gross annual revenue. The council extended eligibility to storefront nonprofits and independently owned franchises.
Home-based businesses, lending or investment institutions and insurance companies do not qualify for grants.
The city intends to raise $400,000 for the fund through private and public contributions and begin distributing grants before June 1. The city plans to contribute $50,000.
A subcommittee of the city’s Economic Development Advisory Committee will vet grant applications and make awards.
Applications will be available at novato.org/bizgrant on May 1.

SAUSALITO
Police nab suspects
in parcel theft case
Sausalito police detained four suspects after a witness reported an apparent package theft outside a home.
A resident on San Carlos Avenue called police at about 4 p.m. Tuesday to report that she saw a woman in her 20s walk out of a champagne-colored car and steal two parcels from her neighbor’s porch, Sausalito police said.
Shortly after, officers spotted a similar car with expired registration tags. Police stopped the car in the 2600 block of Bridgeway. Four people were in the car, and one of the passengers matched the description of the alleged thief.
A records check revealed that the four occupants are on probation and could be searched on the spot. The search revealed stolen packages, metal knuckles, suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, leather gloves, a BB gun and a wig, police said.
Police identified the occupants as Bernave Carrasco, 48, of Vacaville; Andrea McGoldrick, 22, of Napa; Angelique Molina, 24, of Napa; and Marco Cabrera, 25, of Fairfield.
Carrasco and McGoldrick were cited and released pending court dates. They could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
Police plan to file a report with the Marin County District Attorney’s Office seeking conspiracy charges against Molina and Cabrera.
