Police in South San Francisco shot and killed a man Sunday suspected of threatening officers with a knife at the end of a violent rampage that included stabbing two people, including an off-duty officer, during an attempted carjacking and leading police on a chase in a stolen patrol car.

The suspect tried to carjack a driver at a gas station around 5:30 a.m. and stabbed that person during a struggle, a police statement said. An off-duty San Francisco police officer who witnessed the incident tried to intervene but was also stabbed, the statement said.

The officer shot and wounded the man in self-defense, police said, but he still managed to resist South San Francisco officers who responded to the scene. They used a stun gun to try to subdue him, according to the statement, but the tactic didn’t work and he was able to hop into a patrol car and sped away.

The man drove several miles north to a Kaiser Permanente medical office in Daly City, where the tried to drive through the gates to the parking garage. Police said he rammed a police car before getting out of the stolen patrol vehicle.

Police said officers shot him after he pulled out a knife and refused to surrender.

The carjacking victim and the off-duty officer were taken to the hospital and were expected to recover from their injuries, police said. The suspect’s name has not been released.

South San Francisco and Daly City police and San Mateo County prosecutors are investigating the shootings.
