Novato man arrested in San Rafael homicide case

Police have arrested a Novato man on suspicion of murder following a shooting in the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael.

Alan Estuardo Aceitu Perez, 20, was booked into the Marin County Jail on Wednesday night.

In addition to the murder count, Aceitu Perez was booked on suspicion of participating in a criminal street gang, a felony.

Aceitu Perez is being held without bail.

The shooting occurred at about 10:30 p.m. June 11 near the intersection of Medway Road and Mill Street in the Canal neighborhood.

The victim, identified as Erick Boliver Mendez Vasquez, 33, of San Rafael, collapsed in the street after being shot, police. San Rafael paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

San Rafael police investigators identified Aceitu Perez as the suspect and arrested him at about 8 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of Alameda Del Prado in Novato. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office and the Novato Police Department assisted.

San Rafael police Lt. Dan Fink declined to comment on a possible motive for the slaying.

“We are not releasing any further details at this time,” he said. “The case is still active, and additional leads are being followed.”

The Marin County District Attorney’s Office was still reviewing the allegations Thursday and had filed no charges.
